For many Malaysian moviegoers, the local cinema experience just got a little smaller. In a sudden announcement that caught thousands by surprise, mmCineplexes has officially ceased all operations nationwide.

The news broke on September 23, 2025, following a formal notice that its parent company, mm2 Star Screen Sdn. Bhd., has entered into creditors’ voluntary liquidation. Effective immediately, the projectors have gone dark across all 13 of its locations.

A Sudden "Fade to Black"

What makes this closure particularly shocking is how abruptly it happened. Up until the very day of the announcement, mmCineplexes’ social media channels were active, promoting the latest blockbusters and snacks. There were no public warning signs that the fifth-largest cinema operator in Malaysia was on the brink of collapse.

In the official notice, the company confirmed that Chiang Teng Guan of Rodgers Reidy & Co has been appointed as the interim liquidator. Any future correspondence regarding the company is now being directed to them.

A Short-Lived Flagship at Berjaya Times Square

Perhaps the most stinging part of this news is the fate of their crown jewel. It was only in March 2024 that mmCineplexes made headlines for taking over the iconic cinema space at Berjaya Times Square after Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) vacated the premises following a 17-year run.

Branded as mmCineplexes Plus, the location was unveiled as a state-of-the-art flagship just over a year ago. It featured premium concepts like the "Elite Plus" lounge and "Kiddo" studios, aimed at redefining the city-center movie experience. For such a high-profile takeover to end in liquidation so soon after its grand opening underscores the immense pressure currently facing the exhibition industry.

More Than Just a Cinema

While giants like GSC and TGV often dominate the headlines in major cities, mmCineplexes held a special place in the hearts of those living in smaller towns and suburban hubs. For many, it was the go-to spot for a Friday night out without having to travel far. Its sudden departure leaves a significant gap in local entertainment.

Where the Curtains Have Fallen

The closure affects 13 locations across the country. If you were planning a movie night at any of the following spots, please note they are now permanently closed:

  • mmCineplexes Plus Berjaya Times Square (Kuala Lumpur)
  • mmCineplexes 1 Plaza (Selangor)
  • mmCineplexes Kiara Square (Negeri Sembilan)
  • mmCineplexes Segamat Central (Johor)
  • mmCineplexes Mahkota Parade (Melaka)
  • mmCineplexes Mesa Mall (Negeri Sembilan)
  • mmCineplexes JB City Square (Johor)
  • mmCineplexes Prangin Mall (Penang)
  • mmCineplexes Kerian Central (Perak)
  • mmCineplexes D'Mall (Perak)
  • mmCineplexes Sunshine Bertam (Penang)
  • mmCineplexes Langkawi Parade (Kedah)
  • mmCineplexes The Summer Mall (Sarawak)

Why Is the Show Ending?

While the company hasn’t released a detailed breakdown of its financial struggles, the cinema industry at large has been fighting an uphill battle. The rise of streaming services and the long-term impact of the pandemic have shifted how we consume media.

Global reports project that box office revenues might not return to pre-pandemic levels until late 2029. For a mid-sized chain, navigating high rentals and falling ticket sales has proven to be a bridge too far.

What About Your Vouchers and Tickets?

With the company in liquidation, the process for refunds is now in the hands of the liquidators. If you have unspent vouchers, you may need to reach out to the appointed firm:

As we say goodbye to mmCineplexes, we lose a piece of our local entertainment landscape. Whether it was the iconic popcorn or the memories of watching a first movie at Berjaya Times Square, mmCineplexes will certainly be missed.
